Rivalry exists in our daily lives and we might display this without us even knowing. The most common rivalry is known as sibling rivalry.Sibling rivalry is the type of competition amongst brothers and sisters whether they are blood-related or not.
There are many causes to sibling rivalry, one might be due to favouritism within the family, or simply because the child demands more attention from parents.Physical and emotional changes cause pressures in the teenage years, as do changing relationships with parents and friends. Fighting with siblings as a way to get parental attention may increase in adolescence.Sibling rivalry often continues throughout childhood and can be very frustrating and stressful to parents.
Sibling rivalry may cease with time or might get worse when the adolescence enters adulthood.According to Kyla Boyse from the University of Michigan, each child in a family competes to define who they are as individuals and want to show that they are separate from their siblings. Children may feel they are getting unequal amounts of their parents’ attention, discipline, and responsiveness. Children fight more in families where there is no understanding that fighting is not an acceptable way to resolve conflicts, and no alternative ways of handling such conflicts. Stress in the parents’ and children’s lives can create more conflict and increase sibling rivalry.
As the world evolves slowly, the people are slowly abandoning the old traditions where females are not accepted in the family etc.. The way that parents resolve problems and disagreements sets a strong example for kids, as all children look up to their parents and hence it is important for parents to watch their behaviour conscientiously and always respect your child. Also making sure that the children are not neglected for sibling rivalry amongst each other are able to cause them to turn against each other and turn aggressive just for the attention of parents.Although sibling rivalry is very common in families, and parents play the most important role in resolving the conflicts amongst siblings and not further aggreviate the situation.
