Teen slashed in AMK
by Brian Huang
POLICE have arrested a teenager who was involved in an attack on another youth in Ang Mo Kio on Thursday.
In yet another incident of youth violence, a 17-year old , who was acquainted with the alleged attacker, also 17, was slashed on the right shoulder at Block 448, Ang Mo Kio Avenue 10 at about 7pm.
The victim, who left a blood trail from outside a 24-hour restaurant, where the attack took place, was taken to Tan Tock Seng Hospital.
The New Paper reported on Friday that the two youths had got into a loud dispute and a shoving match before the victim was knifed.
A police spokesman told straitstimes.com on Friday morning that the incident had nothing to do with gang activities, and investigations are ongoing.
The latest incident comes after a teen was slashed to death at Downtown East and seven others were attacked in Bukit Panjang.

Does Job interest hold greater importance than the salary it gives?
Does job interest hold greater importance than the salary it gives? Well for me in general, it is a grey area as there are various factors that come into play when it comes to choosing a job. It depends on practical considerations and one’s priorities In life. Different situations beg for different kind of responses. Different people have different priorities.
Practical considerations. Take, for example, a man who is struggling to provide for his family and other dependents. If he had the choice of a high-paying, yet mundane job that will make ends meet or a low-paying job that suits his personal interests but does not pay the bills? The answer is obvious. After all, he is acting more out of necessity. Or take the case of someone senior who has been recently retrenched and finds it difficult to find another job. This person needs a job, finds it hard to compete with younger candidates and hence would be willing to settle for a less satisfying role. This person may accept a job offer that does not meet his expectations because of limited choices. People who need to survive with basic necessities to fulfil and primarily find it hard to find a job in the first place would place a greater importance than salary than job interest. At the other end of the spectrum, financial considerations aside, let us take the scenario of a very high paying job but which requires enormous amounts of travelling on a daily basis. In spite of the attractiveness of the salary, due to the impractically of the job of spending of a lot of time on the road, the person would choose a lower paying job closer to home.
However, if we are talking about financially secure people who have a choice it will boil down to their priorities and what they value instead. Is it job satisfaction they are looking for? Or financial stability? As aforementioned, there are still a large number of other factors too that can affect his decision. For example, factors such as job security, parental pressure for a certain job, good work-life balance, time with family and pursuing one’s aspirations. For example, a person can reject a higher paying job because it takes away valuable quality time he can spend with his family. For a person who values money above all, they will take on a high paying job because it will help them achieve their financial goals. A person who is new in the job market would value job interest and the breadth of experience over salary per se
Personally, if I was given a choice I would go for a job that interests me instead of just money alone. I would find a job that both interests me and pays reasonably well because I do value other things in life such as pursuing my interests and spending time with family and friends. If it is simply between job interest and salary, job interest would be more important. However in reality, there are still a large number of factors that governs one’s decisions based on their priorities in life. I would agree with the statement insofar that practical, particularly financial considerations are not critical issues. To reiterate, practical considerations, the need to make ends meet, remove one’s choice of deciding between needs and wants. That aside, where one has a choice, than I would agree that although it is not the only factor, but job interest would be of greater importance than salary.
Job interest holds greater importance than the salary it gives. How far do you agree with this statement?
In life, we have choices. We often can choose between what pays better, what pays worse, what jobs have more benefits and what jobs have less. However, if we take a closer look. These choices only apply to people that have better educational background. Take this example to a student that completed university and a student that got expelled from secondary school. It is clear that the one that completed university would have more choices while the student that got expelled would have to look high and low and at all the nooks and crannies of the business world to find an employer that would trust him/her and pay him/her a decent salary that would be able to sustain him/her.
So when it comes down to this. The choice between Salary and Job Interest only applies to a certain group as we cannot stereotype all scenarios people are in.
People that DO have choices, usually would go for the higher paying jobs as with today's day and age. The cost of living is extremely high. People of the current generation are often obligated to work hard and earn a decent salary to support their family. They want to live in comfort and to do exactly that, they often need to sacrifice many hours to work and sacrifice the passion for the field of work they are in.
Often, the people with the least choices on interest of job and salary of job are the people that are the sole breadwinners of their family. These people that to spend ridiculous amounts of time at work just to scrimp their families away through the month to the next paycheck. These people have no choice but do to so, or else their family will suffer.
However much salary is important though, interest of the job could determine how well you succeed in doing your work. If one has no interest in the job, one would probably slog through the days with no happiness at all. It would be possible to say that when one has no interest in the job, their performance at work would be under average or unacceptable. Thus they would always be in the hot seat or on the list of prime candidates to be reprimanded, demoted or even fired.
I believe that if one is passionate about the job, and keeps working at it hard enough. The effort will pull through and one might even be promoted. Hard work, time and a lot of scrimping will be required to do this. I guess this will just have to depend on the certain individuals level of determination and current situation. If the individual has a family of four to feed, they have no time to work happy and wait to be promoted for a better pay.
My own mother is probably a victim of this but she has often told me that the love and passion for the job comes eventually. With an optimistic temperament towards the job and an office full of kind and considerate people, the interest and passion for the job will definitely build. Thus when it is like this - the line between salary and interest for the job is blurred significantly.
Thus to me, the salary of the job is of greater importance as job interest will build with time.

Question: Job interest holds greater importance than the salary it gives. How far do you agree with this statement?
First of all, one of the reasons why people take up a job is because they have a family to feed and everyone in the family depends on him for food. If one loses his job, his entire family, including himself, will go hungry and in severe cases, die of hunger. In this situation, the salary that one receives from his employer is way more important than the amount of interest he has in the job.
Secondly, the cost of living of the people living in the twenty-first century is high. As a result, their standard of living has also risen. This can be shown by the handful teenagers going out to work at the age of fourteen. Amazingly, these youths work not because they need to feed themselves or their family, but just to purchase the designer goods of their dreams. A newspaper report has stated that a thirteen-year-old girl spending thousands over dollars to buy designer goods a month. Therefore, this implies that the salary of a job is more important than the job interest of one.
On the other hand, some people take up jobs because they believe that those are the jobs that they can really put their heart in it and work happily, regardless of the salary it gives. Showing interest in the job that one works in is pretty important because one has to spend months, years of even the whole of their lives working in that particular job. If a person is not going to enjoy his job, it is impossible for him to go to work every day, feeling excited about the amount of time that he is going to spend working. Also, he is apparently not going to put as much effort as compared to a job that he loves.
Moreover, everyone has only a life to live. It is up to one if he wants to live it to the fullest and enjoy his one and only life, or earn a lot of money but feel that there is no entertainment at all in the job that he holds. One can only truly work hard and feel that working in a job is worth his time when he shows interest in what he is doing. For instance, if one aspires to be an artist and he wants to pursue his dream and make it come true, he would definitely put in a lot of effort in drawing, even though being as artist may not earn him as much money as working in a big and successful company that has expanded to overseas. While sacrificing the huge amount of money that he could have earned, he has spent his entire life enjoying himself and made his dream come true. Hence, he would not feel that he has wasted his life.
Different people have different aspects when looking for a job. Regardless of whether the salary is high or low, the job is interesting or boring; one has to be satisfied with what he has chosen for himself so that he will live with no regrets.
Job interest holds greater importance than the salary it gives. How far do you agree with this statement?
When a person chooses his or her job based on their interests, it is more likely that the person would enjoy his or her time while working more even if it is a tiring task. Although choosing a job that is based on one's interest is a better choice, this is a rare chance for one to choose a job he or she likes over a job that has a higher salary. It is also seldom for people to be able to get into the job they want.
Being able to have a job one is interested in enables one to enjoy his or her time at work and would not feel stressed or burdened to wake up for another day at work. Completing assignments and tasks assigned to a person will also seem a lot less tiring when he or she has interest in doing it. A day at work would not feel like a chore. Instead, it would be something that people could actually looked forward to.
Doing something one enjoys could also give purpose to their lives. This enables them to have a positive attitude and mindset towards life. Being in a happier mood lowers the possibilites of one having a bad temper as he or she would not be aggitated or annoyed easily when there is an addition to things they looked forward to and enjoys. Their attitude at work would be more pleasant and working with their colleagues would be easier.
However, the chances of people choosing the job they have interests in are rather low. People usually care more on how much would they get paid. The salary of the job contributes to a person's social status. Therefore, they would be more likely to want a job that would improve their social status instead of one they have interests in as it is a part of the human nature. Since the cost of living has always been increasing, people would be more likely to choose a job that give a higher salary to balance the cost of their living, especially those who have a family to support.
Therefore, I agree to the statement stated to a certain extent.

Job interest holds greater importance than the salary it gives. How far do you agree with this statement?
However , the reason why I believe that having an interest that particular job is more important that its salary is because based on the fact that you will be able to enjoy the job more than others ,and thus be more productive than their co-workers. Rather than being forced to work , you will be able to enjoy your career as well as being able to earn a living for yourself , creating a win-win situation for yourself.
However , most people would not pursue their job of interest , and more often than not the reason is because they would feel that you wouldn’t be living up to their expectants of other peers . For example , if a man had a strong desire to be a bus driver . If he pursues his dream , chances are that he would definitely excel in that job promotions will flood into his life. However , chances are that he would not pursue his dream job , instead that man would choose a career that more socially respectable , such as being a banker. The main reason I feel, why people do not join the job that feel that you want is because of the fear of not having a stable and high income that they can enjoy.
Having a profession that you are interested in also helps to keep many aspects of your life stable. Having a career that you love will improve your temperament , as you do not feel burdened while at work. Also , by being less short-tempered , it allows you to be more patient around your co-workers. This will eventually lead to good social relationships to be built in a short period of time, which will enable you to have a broad range of connections. Also , having interest in your line of work enables you display your full leadership qualities , enabling you to become the natural leader in that sector , allowing you to receive promotions and bonuses easily. Hence , you will be financially stable.
Having a occupation that you are interested is definitely more important than the salary , as you will eventually receive a stable financial income , plus benefits such as a good social life as well as a healthy mental thinking. Thus , I feel that it is not important that a job is well paying, rather whether the job provokes interest in you.
Job interest holds greater importance than the salary it gives. How far do you agree with this statement?
In my point of view i think this is so because if you want to do well in a job and be always fully committed, one has to always like what he or she is doing. This proves my first point that the commitment in a job is more importance than the amount paid. i think that if someone is not keen on working the job he is working now then there will be utterly no point in life. Unless the person's wish in life is to forever stay unhappy about the job he has and that life is just to earn big bucks. I think that if a person wants his or her life to be truly meaningful, he or she has to choose wisely between money and happiness. A person gets one life only and it is either they work to live or live to work. I support the fact that if someone is given a task that he or she does not like at all, he or she will not do it diligently and willingly, unlike someone else who has his dream job and does whatever task given with the utmost thinking that what he or she is doing is something that is meaningful and life-fulfilling hence the person will be able to concentrate and not lose focus in what he or she loves.
Furthermore, to prove my stand i think that the fact that people naturally do not perform well in jobs is because they are not getting the jobs that they want. An example are the office workers in the business career who do not always look so happy every time (no offence) , most of them grew up ever since young with the naive thinking that they will become astronauts or scientist when they grow up, and maybe some of them to be the tycoons of their company, but even so if they are not able to reach their targets, then they will be spending the rest of their lives achieving materialistic goals and never fulfilling their mental goals. This kind of thinking will affect the worker's job as they will be doing something that is torturous towards them and are finding it a burden to do what they are unwilling to do. So the interest of the person in his or her job is a key factor in the working society.
However, the issue about money is also important, as money makes the world go round, and not everyone can do the specific job that he or she wants to, some of them has to take the unwanted jobs every now and then. The amount of salary given in the worker's pay is very important as the pay will help the worker to be able to fulfill whatever earthly need he or she has. Hence the amount of money gotten will enable the worker to be able to pay off things like phone bills and family needs. Some workers put family above all else, hence it is important that their family is safe and secure, so being financially stable is more important to them than their interest.
In conclusion, interest in a job clearly outweighs the issue about the amount of salary.
Job interest holds greater importance than the salary it gives. How far do you agree with this statement?
In my opinion, firstly, if someone is really interested in de job, he will put in more effort in doing, leading to double the results in the end. Secondly, the person who is interested in his job will not find it a chore and tedious when doing his work, thus, this kind of person will seldom or even not procastinate in their work. Thirdly, if he put in more effort in his work, his boss or superior may also be impress with his dilligence, and hence, promote him and give him a raise. Gradually, this person may also get a high salary and staying in his job.
However, having a decent salary is also important as we need money to live, and to make ends meet. This can ensure a decent life, hence people do not have to handle a few jobs just to make ends meet.
On the other hand, if someone take up a job without any interest, he will find even the simplest job a chore, thus it will be very tedious. The person will find himself even more tired after a long day, hence will procastinate even more. The effectiveness thus will drop too. He may even lose his job in the end.
In conclusion, job interest does hold greater importance than salary.
Job interest holds greater importance than the salary it gives
If you are interested in the job, you will feel happy in whatever you do in your job. Furthermore, you will be able to do the work given to you better. In this case, even though the amount of money you earned is very little, you will still be able to feel a sense of satisfaction.
On the other hand, if you are not interested in the job, you will not feel happy with whatever work you are given with and thus the work you produced will not de done well, because you will not put in as much effort you’d put into when you are interested. Eventually, you will feel that it is a hassle going to work everyday, doing things that you do not like. Although you earn a lot, your life will not be happy and well- used but instead sad and boring.
It is crucial that you like your job and do that particular job well instead of just receive your salary every month. This is because like this, you will just be wasting your time doing things that you do not like. This is strongly not encouraged as there will obviously be others who are willing to do that job of yours even better. Instead of finding jobs that you are not interested in, why not give up the chance for people who will be able to manage the job better?
As life is unpredictable, it is important that you should be happy in whatever that you do and live your life to the fullest. Only by doing this, you will be able to enjoy this world fully as a human being even though you do not earn much money.
Question: Job interest holds greater importance than the salary it gives. How far do you agree with this statement?
In my opinion, i feel that having a job you are interested in is far more important than the salary. This is because, if you have a job that you are interested in, you will not think that every assignment that is assigned for you is a not a torture and instead, you would do your assignment beautifully and achieve better results in everything you do.
I feel that job interest and salary are linked together. This is because, if you have a job that you like, you would be passionate to do things well and almost perfect. By doing this, you would achieve greater results and performance. When the boss recognizes your efforts, you would be given a raise. Therefore, job interest is more important than the salary.
It is better to look for a job that you love rather than finding one that is of a higher salary. If looking for a job you love can earn you a high salary very quickly, why not ? Even if your family background is poor, it is better to have a job that you enjoy. In a few years time, maybe you'll still have the job you love and a high salary, isn' t this killing 2 birds with one stone ? Rather than taking a long time to increase your pay with the job you don't like.
Having a job you love gives you
happiness and confidence to do well in your work. By having this, you will succeed in your career.
In conclusion, i feel that having a job that you love is more important as it is your passion towards it and you would excel in this job, giving you a high salary and a job that you love.

Question: Job interest holds greater importance than the salary it gives. How far do you agree with this statement?
Personally, I feel that having a great interest in a job affects the person on the way they work. No doubt happiness is a thing which is priceless and could not be bought with any sum of money. Naturally, people would feel happier whenever they are doing something which they enjoy and love.
Likewise, same for a job, having a great interest towards a particular job could enhance one’s performance, confidence, motivation and many other related factors. People have a greater tendency to do better in their interests. They will not find it a hassle to put in extra efforts like working overtime and the results will be terrific or even better than terrific. Holding onto a job of interest could also help build one’s self-esteem and confidence. It serves as a motivation to do better in the job.
With a job of interest, one could meet all sorts of people who have the same interests as them. This way, they could broaden their social network. With a bigger social network, one could rely on these to make money in a way or another.
However, everything could be contradicted because of how fast-paced and complex the society is today.
If you were given two choices – one, hold a job of interest with low paying salary or two, hold a job with a high salary and special benefits like insurances and monthly allowance, which choice would you pick? I believe that most, like myself, would pick the second choice instead of the first. Why? It is because pursuing a job of interest with a low paying salary approximately about two thousand dollars every month will not be satisfactory. With the high standards of living, one could not possibly live without any problems with only two thousand dollars especially when they have a big family to feed. With many problems arising, how would one feel happy?
According to a recent survey on Ezinearticles.com, only forty five percent of Americans are satisfied with their jobs while a whopping fifty five percent of Americans are reporting to a job which they are not happy because it is not a job of their interest. Why then do these people still work in that field if they are not happy? Well for one it could be because it offer better wages or it could also be because they are not competent enough or are unable to get into the job of their choice due to other reasons. The main point is that they are continuing to do what they are doing even though they are unhappy because of practical reasons. Take Tom Wingfield from The Glass Menagerie, a play by Tennessie Williams, for example, he is working with the “Continental Shoemakers” a job that offers “sixty five dollars a month” even though he hates it. Why so? Well it’s because he is the sole breadwinner of the family after his father had abandoned them because he “fell in love with long distances”. He shoulders the family’s expenses and is forced to subdue his desire for “adventure” for practical reasons like fulfilling his responsibilities towards his family. As can be seen, salary is the factor that most people will put prior to job interest.
In conclusion, job interests do not really hold a greater interest compared to the salary it gives.
Question: Job interest holds greater importance than the salary it gives. How far do you agree with this statement?
Job interest holds greater importance than the salary it gives. How far do you agree with this statement?
Holding a job that is of your own interest would definitely mean that you possess passion in your job. You will not find it a bore or a chore to do it. As we spend th majority of our time on our jobs, it is an essential factor for us to stay happy. When one has interest in his job, one will be able to overcome all odds in his job,as he will take the extra mile to find solutions to his problems
When the person works for the sake of his own interest rather than the money, he will not feel that it is a pressure to do the job --- If the job is lost, he will have to worry for his next meal.In other words, he is doing his job in a non-pressurising state of mind, which will lead to a better job performance and result.
From the idiom, A rolling stone gathers no moss. If one has interest in his job, he will not be "job hopping". In this way, he is able to stay long in his job and make it a successful career.
On the other hand, salary is also an another major factor when one considers a job. If a person comes frpm a not so well-to-do family, he needs to find a job with a higher salary to contribute to his family's expenditure.
In the event that one chooses a job because of it's high salary, it could be that he needs the cash to satisfy his own materialistic desire. With more cash in hand, he is able to purchase branded stuff, drive a flashy cars and has the '5Cs' - cars, credit cards, cash, condominium, country club membership. With all these, he has to pay monthly instalments which prompts him to choose a job with higher pay.
Whether a person chooses his job based on his interest or higher salary based, it all boils down to personal needs, job interest give one emotional satisfactory while high salary based gives one materialism satisfaction.

Job interest holds greater importance than the salary it gives. How far do you agree with this statement?
"Job interest holds greater importance than the salary it gives." i agree with this statement to a certain extend.
In my opinion, i think that having great interest in doing a job and in that job greatly effects the person as it makes the person more willing to do the job and complete the job faster and with good results. Having low interest in the job will cause the person to be more slack in their work and make the whole process of the job a very torturous experience and results of the work would be undesirable and done improperly.so having interest in the job that you are doing is important as it will allow you to give it your all to do the job and enjoy doing the job.but the salary of the job is also important to some people as they may need the money or make sure that they can earn enough to make ends meet.some people think that the salary is important to helping them secure a better future for their offspring or to pursue further education and in order to do so they would need to work even harder for the money.
many people work either to gain work experience , earn money to provide for , or simply just to keep oneself occupied but little people appreciate the process of their work and when there is a mistake made , people tend to blame others instead of immediately addressing the problem and solving it once and for all.
Hence having the love and interest for the job is more important than the salary as it boosts the employee's moral to complete the work more efficiently to produce a good piece of work that in-turn may lead to a bonus in the person's paycheck that will act as a additional goal to complete the work faster , and it will be up to the person to decide which is more important to them based on their financial background .
Job interest holds greater importance than the salary it gives. How far do you agree with this statement?
I agree to this statement to a certain extent.
I personally feel that our interest is more important than money. Money doesn’t give you everything. Therefore, aren’t our feelings the most important? If we take on a job that has a very good salary, but we ourselves do not really know what the job is about, then what is the point of taking up this job? Isn’t it a waste of our time and effort?
On the other hand, this may depend on oneself personal feeling. If one has a complicated family background, or one has no choice, then that is another story. However, it is still important that one must still have his or her own interest as his or her top priority.
Money is another story. Money can’t give you anything. For example, one cannot buy oneself out of a death threatening situation. You have to use what you learnt in school or training or use your own methods of solving the problem.
In conclusion, what matters most is still one’s own opinion. Others cannot make them for you. Hence, one must be independent enough to make his or her own decision.

Job interest holds greater importance than the salary it gives. How far do you agree with this statement?
Firstly, in my own opinion, the most important thing when one have a job is to love the things they do. I feel that it is important to love and enjoy what we are doing. In this way, we are then able to appreciate what we are doing and thus soar to greater. There is a saying goes, " do the things that you love and not for the sake of doing it". Therefore, it is when someone holds the interest that they are doing and thus, they will be able to put in hundred percent of their effort to complete their job.
However, there are minorities of the adults are able to appreciate what they are doing. Most of them feel that making money is the most important that they do. Often times, having a job means another source of income for them to provide to for their family. These people often put in their best not because of the job interest that holds them but the self satisfaction of earning more money. Very often, we see many adults working overtime so as to ensure that they have a safe and secure income. It is a very unlikely case that people do the work that they like.
Even if we do really have a passion in the job but it does not necessarily means that we will be able to get it. In our society, job priorities are usually given to people who have received a higher education. For example, if a graduate who obtains a degree in medicine while another graduate received a masters in medicine, it is very obvious that the job vacancy will definitely be given to the people who obtain a masters in medicine rather than the latter.
Hence, in conclusion, i feel that having a job really depends of how the persons views it. For me, i feel that it is important that we have a great passion in what we are doing and also at the same time, the salary of the job also matters too.
Job interest holds greater importance than the salary it gives. How far do you agree with this statement?
In my opinion, if you have a great interest in the job that you have, naturally you will be more enthusiastic and spontanous when it comes it work and the salary is just a bonus to your interst. I believe that as long as you are more into your job rather than the salary it gives, the path to success has already been paved ready for you to step on it and face the challenge.
Quoted from Sumiko Tan fron the straits time very veyr long ago, : People should live to work, and not work to live" I agree with this statement, most of the people in the society now works for a living, to support family etc. They do not really enjoy their jobs and find their job boring and a chore which they have to do till they die. All because of money. Agreeing that salary is equally as important, having an interest in the jobs will benefit ourselves better. Whereas you live to work, you can fully enjoy the spirit of being to work, and you will enjoy your job so much so that you will look forward to it everyday. Also, allowing yourself to love your job will make things easier for yourself, and you get your salary too!! In this way you are happy, rather than you hate your job and be upset over it everyday.Like this, you are wasting your life isn't it?
I feel that people should make a wise choice over what job they want in their future. Spend some time and think what do you really enjoy and what do you want to challenge yourself. Once you have decided, stick to that decision and strive hard towards your goal! In this way, when you get a job of your desired, you will feel that every hard work you've put in pays off, every drop of sweat was worth it and every cent of the salary doesnt really matters because ultimately you are doing what you love to do, and that really matters.

Holiday Week 1: Reflection 1
School can wait, childhood cannot
Gen Y parents should relax a bit and not push to make kids top achievers
by Corrie Tan
It is easy when you are not a parent to write off worries that run along the lines of, what if my child does badly in school? Or what if she does not have the interview skills to get a good job? Or what if he lacks an appreciation of the arts?
Me, I worry instead that Singapore's novice parents - my peers - seem to be pushing too hard when it comes to child-raising.
Rattled by the Ministry of Education's announcement that examinations at the Primary One level would be scrapped by 2013, many parents rushed to buy endangered exam papers of top primary schools from unauthorised vendors.
Let's not even talk about private tuition. Last month, The Straits Times reported that children as young as four are being sent for extra classes to prepare them for primary school. And, oh, to the Toastmasters Club to hone their speech and presentation skills.
At this rate, the average Singaporean six-year-old will soon have: a Grade Eight certificate in piano and violin, flawless public speaking skills, the ability to multiply and divide four-digit numbers and a vocabulary to bamboozle college professors.
Early childhood educators have advised caution. If a child enjoys his or her classes, then there is something to be gained from them. But children should not be dragged there kicking and screaming.
While parental concerns about a child's future are legitimate, I wonder if the greater slice of Gen Y, achievement-oriented and exposed to a surfeit of education options, measures success only in terms of grades and trophies.
Or do they, as time-starved young professionals, equate enrolling their children in enrichment courses with a greater contribution to their development?
I believe that an unwilling child is likely to learn nothing, regardless of his hours in class. And isn't it a happy childhood that matters in the end, since it's something that cannot be reclaimed?
From age four to six, I frequented the playground and not tuition centres. The piano was a foreign instrument that produced noise when I attacked its keys.
At six, I played an angel in a kindergarten Nativity play. My knees shook and I forgot some lines. And maths? What was maths?
I still passed A-level mathematics, went to university, got a job and can knock out some tunes on the piano.
In a blog devoted to her cancer-stricken four-year-old duaghter - now cancer-free after chemotherapy - a former teacher of mine summed it up best: "One thing I know for sure, I'm going to let my little girl enjoy her childhood and forget about angsting about her being monolingual or being unable to spell anything other than words like princess, love, castle and once upon a time.
"School can wait. Jobs can wait. Childhood cannot. Life cannot."
